PACHO is a collaborative project with the Centro Cultural Comunitario “Laaz Galnazak Xtee Xigyae” de Teotitlán del Vallle, a Zapotec community well-known for its wool weavings and rugs, la promesa Danza de la Pluma, Zapotec gastronomy and beeswax candles. It is a vibrant community that is rooted in its Zapotec culture and traditions and is committed to creating a permanent community archive to collect and preserve their rich historical past with oral history interviews between youth and community elders and in collecting and maintaining a historic photographic archive of their community.
Miguel Lopez Lemus and I have been working with the Committee of the Centro Cultural Comunitario (2024/2026) training 3 young women from the community to record and interview in Zapotec the “abuelitos” or elders talk about their lives, traditions and their work in the community. From herbalists/healers, politicians, storytellers, weavers 15 abuel@s were interviewed in 2025 and additional interviews will be conducted throughout 2026. The three young women on the video team, Raices que Recuerdan, wrote, directed and shot a short video about their experiences in video production and in interviewing the abuelit@s.
This short 9 minute video is called “Voces del Pasado” (Tsæ Beny Gulal) and is available with a grouping of 30 photographs that were taken during the recordings of the interviewees, their environment and of the videotaping and editing process.
